NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BFMG) — A 6-year-old boy died after falling more than 80 feet from an apartment balcony in Nashville’s Madison neighborhood, and police said no foul play is suspected.
Police were called Tuesday night, May 12, to an apartment complex on Webster Street after a report that a child had fallen from the balcony of the apartment he shared with his mother. Authorities said the boy’s mother briefly went into another room, and when she returned, she could not find him.
After searching the apartment and the eighth-floor hallway, the mother looked over the balcony railing and found the boy on the concrete below, police said. Investigators determined the fall was about 81 feet. The child, later identified as Kingston McWilliams, was taken to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, where he died.
Police spokesman Don Aaron told USA Today that the mother said the boy sometimes tried to climb or lean over the balcony, and she had repeatedly warned him not to do so. Aaron said the incident appears to have been a tragic accident.
“From everything we know, it appears to be a tragic accident,” Aaron told USA Today. “Just horrible.”
Residents told WSMV they were stunned by the death and said the incident was a reminder of how quickly accidents can happen.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and that Youth Services detectives are involved.
