PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. (BFMG) — Authorities say they are aggressively pursuing every lead in the suspected abduction of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, as investigators appeal to the public for information and acknowledge they still lack critical answers in the case.
During a news conference Tuesday, officials urged anyone who may have seen anything suspicious on Saturday night or Sunday morning near Guthrie’s home outside Tucson to call 1-800-CALL-FBI, stressing that every lead is important and will be followed up.
Investigators said they do not yet know whether Guthrie was specifically targeted, and they have no clothing description to share. They also do not know whether a single person or multiple people were involved in her kidnapping.
When asked if there was any indication Guthrie is alive, authorities said they “hope” she is, but stopped short of providing further assurances. They said there is no known specific threat to the public tied directly to Guthrie’s disappearance, but noted that violent crime is always a general concern for the community.
According to the timeline outlined by the sheriff’s office, Guthrie was dropped off at her home around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. She was known to be missing by about 11 a.m. Sunday, after family members discovered she was not at home and could not be located.
Officials said there were signs of violence at the site. DNA samples collected from inside the home have been submitted and some results have been returned, but investigators said nothing so far points to any suspect.
When questioned about whether there was forced entry, the sheriff acknowledged there were concerns but declined to address those details specifically, citing the ongoing investigation.
Investigators also revealed that a camera from Guthrie’s home is missing, though they said they do not know what happened to it. Authorities further noted that they do not know where Guthrie is now or whether she remains in the area.
When asked if there had been any ransom demands or direct communication from potential kidnappers, officials said they are following “investigative leads” but would not provide specifics.
Other agencies have joined the search and investigation. Customs and Border Protection has assisted with search efforts, including the use of dogs, and the FBI is also actively involved in the case.
Authorities are again urging anyone with information, no matter how minor it may seem, to contact 1-800-CALL-FBI as the effort to locate Nancy Guthrie continues.
