LOS ANGELES (BFMG) — The father of a missing Hawaii woman has died in an apparent suicide while searching for his daughter, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Ryan Kobayashi, 58, reportedly jumped from a parking structure near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) around 4 a.m. on Sunday, police confirmed.
Kobayashi had been searching for his daughter, 30-year-old Hannah Kobayashi, who was last seen on Nov. 8. She missed a connecting flight to New York from LAX, where she was supposed to meet family.
Family members said they received strange text messages from Hannah on Nov. 11, in which she mentioned someone trying to steal her identity. Calls to her phone later went straight to voicemail, and she has not been heard from since.
Surveillance footage captured Hannah boarding a Metro train at Pico Station around 10 p.m. on Nov. 18. She was last seen wearing black leggings, a tie-dye sweatshirt, and a green backpack.
The Kobayashi family held a vigil outside Crypto.com Arena on Thursday to raise awareness about her disappearance.
“We’re trying to make them take us seriously because it’s been 11 days,” said Laire Pidgeon, Hannah’s aunt. “Just because she doesn’t have a mental illness and just because she is not elderly doesn’t mean something didn’t happen to her.”
The family continues to urge anyone with information about Hannah’s whereabouts to contact the LAPD.
For those experiencing suicidal thoughts or concerned about others, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available at 1-800-273-TALK.
