TAMPA, Fla. (BFMG) — A Tampa man has been charged with second-degree murder after allegedly killing his mother with a concrete brick, reportedly over a dispute concerning a trust fund.
According to a probable cause affidavit, on Dec. 9 at approximately 8:22 a.m., the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the suspect, identified as 41-year-old Michael Anthony Moore. During the call, Moore made statements about “being put down by lethal injection” and stated, “There’s a dead body here” and “I put her down.” He identified the victim as his mother, Shambray Lavern Levy.
Deputies responded to the residence in the 8000 block of Beaty Grove Drive and conducted a welfare check. Inside, they discovered Levy’s body on the floor, covered with blood-soaked blankets. Authorities noted that she had “visible marbling” and appeared to be in the process of decomposition according to a press release by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from inside the home, which allegedly showed Moore attacking Levy with a concrete brick on Dec. 6 at around 3:30 p.m. The assault reportedly lasted six minutes. After the attack, Moore is accused of using a shovel to destroy the surveillance camera.
A friend of Levy’s informed authorities that Levy had previously confided about a domestic violence incident in which Moore allegedly struck her and threatened her with brass knuckles. The friend had advised Levy to install a lock on her door.
Moore’s sister told investigators that when she was unable to contact their mother on the morning of Dec. 9, she called Moore. He allegedly responded, “It’s fine. It’s all been taken care of. They’ll just put me down [with] lethal injection.”
The sister also revealed that Levy had “recently inherited a substantial amount of money” following the death of her own mother and intended to leave a portion to Moore “in the event of her own death.”
During a post-Miranda interview, when detectives inquired about his employment, Moore reportedly stated, he lives a “normal free life now. Normal life. Till I get what belongs mine. My trust fund.” He also made unsolicited comments about it being his “constitutional right” to receive “lethal injection” before requesting legal counsel.
Moore is currently held without bond and is scheduled for a pretrial detention hearing on Friday.
The investigation remains ongoing.
