GREER, S.C. (BFMG) — Five people were killed in a head-on collision overnight on Highway 101 in Spartanburg County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The Greenville Police Department has issued a statement identifying two of it’s officers who were involved. Sergeant Ashley Munoz, an 11-year veteran of the department, was killed in the collision. Munoz was promoted to sergeant in 2023 and supervised the department’s Criminal Investigations Units, including Property Crimes, Financial Crimes and Family Crimes.
Sergeant Diana Munoz, a 12-year veteran, was airlifted to a local hospital and remains in critical condition. She was promoted to sergeant in 2022 and serves as the department’s public information officer.
Before 1 a.m., the Trinity Fire Department responded to an iPhone crash notification on Highway 101 near Bellview Road Extension. When crews arrived, they found a Ford SUV and a Toyota SUV with multiple occupants trapped inside, officials said.
The Highway Patrol said the Ford was traveling north on Highway 101 and the Toyota was traveling south when the vehicles collided. The driver and two passengers in the Toyota were killed. That is the vehicle the Munoz family was reportedly driving.
The driver and a passenger in the Ford also were pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials said the couple, who have two small children, were returning from vacation when the crash happened.
A memorial for Ashley Munoz has been set up at the City of Greenville’s Public Safety Campus at 204 Halton Road. The public is invited to visit the memorial to pay respects and show support for the Munoz family and the Greenville Police Department.
