COLUMBIA, S.C. (BFMG) — A 22-year-old woman from North Carolina was shot and killed early Saturday during a home invasion while visiting friends in Columbia, authorities said.
Logan Federico of Waxhaw, N.C., was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot in the chest during what police described as a burglary in progress on the 2700 block of Cypress Street. The incident occurred just after 3 a.m. on May 3, according to the Columbia Police Department.
Investigators identified the suspect as Andrew Dickey, 30, who they say was actively burglarizing homes in the neighborhood when Federico entered the residence.
After the shooting, Dickey allegedly stole firearms, keys and credit cards before fleeing the area in a stolen vehicle. Police said he later used stolen items to make purchases in West Columbia.
he suspect’s vehicle reportedly broke down in Saluda County, where Dickey arranged for a tow to a residence in Gaston. That move allowed authorities to begin tracking him. A short time later, a resident reported seeing a man flee nearby woods and steal another vehicle.
Investigators believe Dickey then broke into a home and set it on fire before being captured.
At a Friday news conference, Columbia Police Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook and Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford confirmed the timeline of events and expressed condolences to Federico’s family. Federico’s father, visibly emotional, described his daughter’s vibrant spirit and the heartbreak of her sudden loss.
Charges against Dickey are expected to include murder, multiple counts of burglary and arson.
The investigation remains ongoing.
