Human trafficking remains one of the most insidious crimes affecting communities across the globe, preying on the vulnerable and exploiting them in ways that leave lasting scars. As part of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, I had the opportunity to sit down with Investigator Chandra Cleveland, founder of SHE Private Investigations & Consultants Group in Columbia, SC. With a decorated career in law enforcement, private investigations, and risk management, Cleveland has dedicated her life to protecting individuals—especially women and girls—from harm.
A Life Committed to Protection
Investigator Cleveland’s mission is crystal clear: to create a safe and empowering environment for those she serves. Through SHE Private Investigations and Consultants, she provides tailored safety strategies for high-profile individuals, corporate executives, and families. As a Personal Protection Expert, she specializes in risk mitigation and ensuring security for those facing unique leadership challenges.
But beyond executive protection, Cleveland’s work as a Certified Human Trafficking Investigator is where she truly makes a difference in the fight against one of society’s darkest crimes.
Recognizing the Signs of Human Trafficking
One of the most critical aspects of Cleveland’s work is helping the public recognize the warning signs of human trafficking. While Hollywood often portrays trafficking as dramatic kidnappings, the reality is far more subtle and widespread. Some common indicators include:
- Signs of control: A person who appears constantly watched or accompanied by someone who won’t let them speak freely.
- Physical abuse or branding: Unexplained injuries, burns, or tattoos that appear to be ownership marks.
- Lack of identification: Victims often do not have control over their own identification documents, such as a passport or driver’s license.
- Unusual work or living conditions: Multiple individuals living in cramped conditions, working long hours with little or no pay, or appearing fearful of authority figures.
- Sudden change in behavior: A drastic shift in demeanor, such as withdrawal from friends and family, increased anxiety, or signs of trauma.
Types of Human Trafficking
Baby trafficking is a form of human trafficking that Investigator Cleveland says is on the rise. It involves the illegal sale, abduction, or exploitation of infants for various purposes, including illegal adoption, forced labor, and, in some cases, organ trafficking. It is a grave violation of human rights and is often linked to organized crime networks.
Illegal Adoption Rings – Infants are stolen or coerced from parents, then sold to unsuspecting adoptive families under falsified legal documents.
Exploitation for Forced Labor or Begging – Babies may be trafficked and forced into street begging operations, often suffering neglect and abuse.
Sex Trafficking – Though rare, infants have been trafficked for child exploitation, an especially horrific crime.
Organ Trafficking – Some trafficking networks illegally trade infants for organ harvesting, though confirmed cases are difficult to trace.
Black Market Sales – Some babies are simply sold for profit in underground markets, often without birth records or proper documentation.
