MOUNTAINAIR, N.M. (BFMG) — Three people are dead and more than a dozen first responders were exposed to an unidentified substance after authorities responded to a suspected overdose call east of Albuquerque, officials said Wednesday.
New Mexico State Police said officers were called to a home in Mountainair, a rural community, where four people were found unresponsive. Three of those individuals died, while the fourth was transported to a hospital in Albuquerque for treatment.
During the response, 18 first responders were exposed to the unknown substance and began experiencing symptoms including nausea and dizziness. All were taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where they were quarantined and are being monitored.
Two of the first responders were listed in serious condition, according to Officer Wilson Silver with New Mexico State Police.
Hazardous materials teams from Albuquerque Fire Rescue responded to the scene to help identify the substance.
“At this time, investigators believe the substance may be transmitted through contact and do not believe it to be airborne,” Silver said.
Officials in Mountainair said there is no known threat to the public and that a secure perimeter has been established around the home.
