INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (BFMG) — A man has been detained after allegedly stabbing both of his parents to death Sunday afternoon inside a home on Indianapolis’ north side, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD).

Officers responded to reports of a stabbing shortly before 12:30 p.m. on October 11, 2026, in the 2800 block of Lakeshire Lane, near 96th Street and Township Line Road.

When officers arrived, they discovered two adults suffering from stab wounds.

An adult woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while an adult man was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, the man later died from his injuries.

Police confirmed that an adult male suspect was detained at the scene.

Investigators believe the suspect is the son of the two victims.

According to an IMPD spokesperson, detectives are investigating whether mental health issues may have played a role in the deadly attack.

Authorities revealed that IMPD’s Mobile Crisis Assistance Team, which responds to situations involving individuals experiencing mental health crises, had previously been called to the residence.

However, investigators have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding those earlier responses or whether they involved the suspect.

The stabbing has shaken residents of the normally quiet neighborhood.

“It’s a very disturbing, sad day for this quiet neighborhood. Residents are very upset. We ask that you think about them at this time. Think about this family. What a loss,” IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson said.

Police have not released the identities or ages of the victims or the suspect.

Authorities have also not announced formal criminal charges or provided additional details about what led to the confrontation.

Detectives are working to obtain search warrants to collect additional evidence as they continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The case remains an active homicide investigation.

Additional information is expected as investigators release further details.

This is a developing story.
