CULLMAN, Ala. (BFMG) — A Cullman attorney is accused of trying to kill her husband by poisoning his food and drinks with what she believed was fentanyl over several weeks last year, according to newly released court records.
Sara Baker, 74, of Vinemont, is alleged to have conspired with at least one other person between Sept. 1 and Nov. 25, 2025, to murder her husband, James Doyle Baker. A criminal complaint says she agreed with others to engage in conduct constituting murder and that a co-conspirator took an overt step toward that goal by providing fentanyl intended to cause his death.
Prosecutors also allege that on three occasions — Sept. 4, Sept. 12 and Sept. 20 — Baker attempted to kill her husband by putting a substance she believed to be fentanyl into his food and/or drink. The attempts are charged as violations of Alabama’s attempted murder statute.
Baker was arrested Nov. 25 and is charged with conspiracy to commit murder, three counts of attempted murder, unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, second-degree elder abuse, four counts of solicitation to commit a controlled substance crime and second-degree domestic violence.
Cullman police said Baker was taken to the Cullman County Detention Center, where she remains in custody pending bond. In a statement, the department thanked the district attorney’s office, the FBI North Alabama Violent Crimes Task Force and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force for assisting in the investigation, which remains ongoing.
