FORT STEWART, Ga. (BFMG) — Casualties have been reported following an active shooter incident at Fort Stewart, a U.S. Army installation in southeast Georgia, authorities confirmed Monday.
The base was placed on lockdown at 11:04 a.m., according to a statement from the verified Facebook page for Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield. The post said, “Casualties have been reported and the situation is ongoing.”
Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, spokesperson for the Fort Stewart Police Department, confirmed the presence of an active shooter but declined to provide additional details, including the number or severity of casualties.
Law enforcement remains on the scene, and the nature of the threat is still under investigation.
Fort Stewart, located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, is home to the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division and serves as a major training and deployment center for both active duty and reserve units. The installation houses more than 10,000 soldiers, family members, and civilian employees, according to its official website.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said on X that he is in “close contact” with law enforcement and expressed condolences to those affected.
“We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,” Kemp wrote.
Further details, including the identity of the suspect and a possible motive, have not yet been released.
