CAMDEN, S.C. (BFMG) — Skeletal remains were discovered Tuesday afternoon in a wooded area near East York Street, the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The remains were found around 5 p.m. by children playing in the woods, according to Sheriff Lee Boan.
“They were riding on some trails in the woods and somehow they got temporarily lost, they got off the trail, and they came across some skeletal remains,” Boan said.
Deputies, Camden police, and the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and confirmed the remains were human. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s Crime Scene Unit was called in to process the site.
The identity of the remains has not been determined. Kershaw County Coroner David West said the remains were sent to Spartanburg County for rapid DNA testing according to WACH.
A family traveled to Spartanburg to provide DNA samples to see if they match the remains, West said.
“If it comes back that they’re not the ones, then we’ll start over from ground zero again, trying to locate something some other way,” West said.
Sheriff Boan said he hopes to receive DNA results within a couple of weeks.
The cause and time of death remain undetermined, officials said.
The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner’s Office continue to investigate.
