Court Date Set for Pro Se Defendant Sarah Boone Accused of Suffocating Her Boyfriend in a Suitcase

ORLANDO, Fla. (BFMG) — A Florida woman accused of fatally trapping her boyfriend in a suitcase during a twisted game of hide-and-seek will now represent herself at her upcoming murder trial, after rejecting eight court-appointed attorneys.

Sarah Boone, 46, is set to stand trial on October 7, 2024, for the second-degree murder of Jorge Torres Jr., nearly four years after her arrest. Boone, who pleaded not guilty, will navigate the courtroom without legal representation following a tumultuous relationship with her previous counsel.

Boone’s journey through the legal system has been marked by friction with attorneys unable to meet her expectations, as detailed in court documents obtained by Fox 35. Judge Michael Kraynick concluded that self-representation was Boone’s “best possible avenue” after numerous attempts to find suitable legal representation failed.

The case drew national attention in February 2020 when Boone was arrested after footage from her cellphone allegedly revealed her mocking Torres as he struggled inside the suitcase, pleading for air. According to police reports, Boone dismissed Torres’s cries, attributing his distress to actions he allegedly took against her.

Initially, Boone claimed she and Torres were intoxicated when they conceived the ill-fated game, believing it would be amusing for Torres to enter the suitcase. Boone purportedly fell asleep, assuming Torres could extricate himself when he chose. Upon awakening the next morning, Boone realized Torres remained inside the suitcase and was unresponsive.

The autopsy report disclosed Torres’s injuries, including scratches, contusions, and blunt force trauma, heightening public interest in the case.

Boone’s trial has been marred by delays attributed to her changing legal representation. Despite the setbacks, the court has now set a firm trial date, anticipating the case to proceed after a scheduled pre-trial conference.

For Boone, the decision to represent herself underscores the complexities of a legal saga that has captured national curiosity, delving into the grim consequences of a game turned deadly.
