MEMPHIS, Tenn. (BFMG) — A father and daughter found shot to death on a gravel road in north Mississippi were on their way to buy a PlayStation 5 from a Facebook Marketplace seller, a family member said.
The Panola County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded around 7 a.m. Sunday to River Road on the outskirts of Sardis, where a passerby had called 911 to report what appeared to be a one-car wreck. When deputies arrived, they found 39-year-old Victor Gonzalez and 19-year-old Serenity Gonzalez inside a vehicle. Both appeared to have died from gunshot wounds.
Investigators said the double homicide may have occurred sometime on Saturday or Sunday. No arrests or suspects have been announced, and authorities have not publicly discussed a possible motive.
Family member Jessie Waterman said Victor was his father and Serenity was his sister. He said both worked as electricians on houses in the Memphis area. Waterman said relatives were told tire tracks at the scene suggested the pair may have been trying to flee from someone, though that detail has not been confirmed by law enforcement. He believes the Facebook Marketplace meetup was a setup.
Panola County Sheriff Shane Phelps has met with family members but has not shared publicly what investigators think led up to the shooting. Neighbors said the stretch of River Road where the bodies were found is remote and lightly traveled.
“It’s got houses up that end and houses up the other end, but very few in between,” neighbor Connie Donahou said. “It’s not a real busy road, but if you live around here, you know about this road. You pretty much have to live around here to know about this road.”
