LONDON (BFMG) — U.K. police arrested Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, on Thursday on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
Thames Valley Police, which covers areas west of London including Mountbatten-Windsor’s former residence, said it was assessing reports that he sent trade documents to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in 2010. The review followed the release of millions of pages of records tied to a U.S. investigation into Epstein. Mountbatten-Windsor’s name appeared multiple times in those documents.
The police force did not initially identify Mountbatten-Windsor, in accordance with U.K. law, but confirmed that a man in his 60s had been arrested. Mountbatten-Windsor is 66.
“Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office,” the police statement said. “We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time.”
Mountbatten-Windsor has repeatedly denied wrongdoing related to his dealings with Epstein. Last fall, King Charles III stripped him of all royal titles, including the right to be called a prince, in an effort to distance the monarchy from continuing controversies surrounding Andrew’s relationship with Epstein.
Images shared on social media Thursday appeared to show unmarked police vehicles at Mountbatten-Windsor’s home, Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, with plainclothes officers gathered outside.
