ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (BFMG) – The South Carolina father and his two young sons, who were reported missing earlier this week, have been found in Texas, authorities confirmed.
According to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), James Brewington and his children—six-year-old Jedidiah Brewington and five-year-old Martin Brewington—were located Wednesday evening in Kemp, Texas. Brewington was taken into custody, and the boys were deemed safe and unharmed.
Timeline of Disappearance
ACSO reported Brewington was last seen Tuesday, Jan. 28, after he picked up one of his sons from an elementary school in Belton, South Carolina. The family was initially reported missing after they failed to return home.
FOX Carolina reported that on Wednesday morning, Brewington’s green 1985 Ford F350 was found abandoned along Stryker Trail in Belton. Detectives later discovered that he and the boys had entered a Ford Edge with a North Carolina license plate and were traveling out of state, making their way toward Texas.
Given Brewington’s known ties to Texas, Anderson County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) tracked his movements and coordinated with Texas Rangers and the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office to locate him.
Arrests and Charges
By 6 p.m. Wednesday, authorities found Brewington and his sons in Kemp, Texas, a small town southeast of Dallas. Brewington was taken into custody without incident. He is currently facing two counts of custodial interference and will be extradited back to South Carolina.
Custodial interference is a criminal offense in South Carolina, typically applied in cases where a parent or guardian unlawfully removes a child from the custody of another legal guardian or in violation of a custody agreement.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not yet disclosed details regarding Brewington’s motives or whether a custody dispute played a role in the incident. However, ACSO confirmed that both children are safe and will be reunited with their legal guardian.
This case remains under investigation.
