SPARTANBURG, S.C. (BFMG) — A man is accused of attempting to set his husband on fire during an incident Saturday on Amos Street, according to the Spartanburg Police Department.
Officers said they arrived at the scene to find the victim being loaded into an ambulance. He was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for treatment.
At the hospital, officers interviewed the victim, who described the events leading to the incident.
The victim said his husband, Eugene Rice, followed him up the street earlier in the day as he was preparing to take an Uber to work. Rice allegedly threatened to kill him, but the victim said he believed Rice was upset and went to work as usual according to WHNS.
The situation escalated when the victim returned home after midnight. Rice reportedly began arguing with him, and the victim said he tried to ignore the behavior, describing Rice as “acting crazy.”
According to the police report, Rice then said, “I’ll show you crazy,” grabbed a bottle of rubbing alcohol, and sprayed it on the victim before setting him on fire.
The victim managed to remove his hoodie, roll on the ground to extinguish the flames, and call 911, police said.
No further details about the victim’s condition were immediately available. Rice is being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
