MEMPHIS, Tenn. (BFMG) — Mayor Paul Young announced Monday the appointment of CJ Davis as the permanent chief of the Memphis Police Department, solidifying her leadership in one of the city’s most critical roles. Davis, who has served as interim chief since August, becomes the first woman to hold the position permanently in the department’s history.
“Chief Davis has demonstrated exceptional leadership and an unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of Memphis residents,” Mayor Strickland said during a press conference at City Hall. “Her experience, vision, and dedication make her the right person to guide our police department forward.”
A Distinguished Career
CJ Davis brings over 30 years of law enforcement experience to the role. Before joining the Memphis Police Department, she served as the police chief of Durham, North Carolina, where she focused on community-oriented policing and crime reduction strategies. Davis also held leadership roles with the Atlanta Police Department, where she began her career in 1986.
Under her interim leadership in Memphis, Davis has emphasized transparency, community engagement, and accountability. She has implemented new training initiatives for officers, enhanced recruitment efforts, and expanded outreach programs aimed at building trust with the community.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to serve as the permanent chief of police for Memphis,” Davis said. “I am committed to fostering a safer, stronger city through collaboration, innovation, and integrity.”
Tracking Challenges
Davis assumes the role at a pivotal time for Memphis. The city has grappled with rising violent crime rates, calls for police reform, and strained community-police relations in recent years. Mayor Strickland expressed confidence in Davis’s ability to address these challenges head-on.
“Chief Davis understands the unique needs of our city and has a proven track record of results,” Strickland said. “I look forward to seeing the positive impact of her leadership.
Community Response
Community leaders and advocacy groups praised Davis’s appointment, highlighting her focus on inclusive leadership and her efforts to build bridges between law enforcement and the community.
“Chief Davis has already shown she’s committed to listening to residents and addressing their concerns,” said Michelle Johnson, a local activist. “Her appointment is a step in the right direction for Memphis.”
Davis’s appointment comes after a nationwide search for the city’s next police chief, a process that included input from community members, law enforcement professionals, and city officials.
As she takes the helm permanently, Davis pledged to continue working closely with all stakeholders to make Memphis a safer and more equitable city.
“My focus will always be on serving and protecting the people of Memphis,” Davis said. “Together, we can create meaningful change and ensure a brighter future for all.”
