MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (BFMG)) — A 17-year-old girl has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of her mother, who authorities say was beaten with a hammer inside their Minnesota home. Prosecutors plan to charge the teen as an adult.
Police conducting a welfare check on June 26 discovered the body of 43-year-old Georgina Lee Monk at a residence in Maplewood, according to local reports. Authorities said Monk suffered blunt force trauma, and an autopsy determined her death was a homicide caused by multiple injuries from an assault.
Monk, who used a wheelchair, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The teen, whose name has not been released because she is a minor, was identified as the suspect and taken into custody. According to charging documents, she allegedly admitted to striking her mother with a hammer.
Investigators say the teen also made statements during questioning, including asking, “Am I a criminal because I only killed one person?”
According to reports, the girl told interviewers she had been hearing voices prior to the killing that urged her to harm people who had hurt her. She later told staff at a day treatment center to check on her mother, expressing regret.
Neighbors told investigators they had previously heard arguments between the teen and her mother. One neighbor said the dispute on the day of the killing appeared more intense than usual and may have involved the mother taking away the teen’s phone.
The case remains under investigation.
