BIG SKY, Mont. (BFMG) — Montana Man Killed While Camping Near Authorities have identified the man found dead while camping near Big Sky on Oct. 1 as 40-year-old Dustin Kjersem. An investigation into the death is ongoing, with law enforcement treating the case as a homicide, despite initial speculation of a possible bear attack.
Kjersem, a Washington native, had been camping with a group of friends when he was discovered unresponsive in his tent at a remote campsite. Deputies responded to the scene after the group reported Kjersem’s death, but details surrounding what transpired remain unclear.
The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office initially considered the possibility of a bear attack given the location and presence of wildlife. However, officials later ruled out animal involvement and confirmed that Kjersem had sustained injuries inconsistent with those typically caused by a bear.
“While this tragic event occurred in bear country, we can now confirm that no wildlife was involved in the death,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement Friday.
The shift in the investigation has sparked questions about what led to Kjersem’s death, with law enforcement now focusing on other possible causes. Detectives have interviewed the friends camping with him and are conducting forensic tests to determine what happened.
According to the New York Times, the FBI is now assisting with the investigation. Authorities have not disclosed the specific injuries Kjersem sustained or whether a weapon was recovered from the scene.
KREM reported that Kjersem was a frequent outdoorsman and an experienced camper. His family said he was known for his love of nature and spending time in the wilderness.
“We are devastated by the loss of Dustin. He was a loving son, brother, and friend who embraced life’s adventures,” the family said in a statement. “We are hopeful that investigators will find the truth behind what happened to him.”
The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office continues to seek the public’s assistance with any information that could help solve the case.
Authorities are urging anyone who was in the Big Sky area in late September or early October to come forward if they noticed anything unusual near campgrounds or wilderness areas.
Kjersem’s death has left both the community and his family searching for answers as the investigation develops. “Dustin lived to explore the outdoors,” his family said. “We only hope that those responsible are brought to justice.”
Blunt Force Media will continue to monitor developments in the investigation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
