GAINESVILLE, Fla. (BFMG) — A 2-year-old girl has died days after Alachua County deputies say her mother beat and stomped on her, causing catastrophic injuries that left the child unresponsive.
Deputies responded Thursday to a reported medical emergency involving an unresponsive toddler. Medical staff later told investigators the child arrived at the hospital with skull fractures and bruising to her head, chest and back.
According to an arrest report, a witness said the child’s mother, Jessica Wilson, 29, and the girl had been staying at the witness’s home for about two weeks. On Thursday night, the witness told deputies Wilson woke her up, handed her the unresponsive toddler and the witness began CPR while 911 was called.
The witness reported that Wilson admitted she had beaten the child. During a later interview with detectives, Wilson allegedly said the toddler “wasn’t listening” and admitted to hitting her with a belt, punching her and stomping on her back. Wilson told deputies she knew she had “gone too far,” according to the report.
Despite three days of intensive treatment, the child died from her injuries Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
Wilson is now charged with second-degree murder and is being held in the Alachua County Jail without bond, according to deputies.
