OXFORD, Miss. (BFMG) — A 22-year-old was resuscitated and hospitalized Thursday after being found unresponsive at an Oxford home where police discovered products they described as synthetic kratom, according to WMC.
Oxford Police Department (OPD) officers responded to the home on Sweetgum Drive around 5 a.m. Emergency responders revived the person, who was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.
Police said the person is not a University of Mississippi student and that the incident is not connected to the recent deaths of two Ole Miss students.
Investigators do not believe the products found at the home were purchased in the Oxford area. Authorities have not established whether those products caused or contributed to the suspected overdose.
The incident comes as Lafayette County Metro Narcotics calls on Mississippi lawmakers to ban products the agency describes as synthetic kratom.
Detectives said 18-year-old Aidan Hamilton and 20-year-old Robert Strang purchased SMAX Pseudo-DHM pills, described as a chemically manipulated product, days before their deaths.
Toxicology results have not been released for either student. The reported purchases do not establish that the products caused their deaths.
In a statement released Wednesday, Lafayette County Metro Narcotics urged lawmakers to hold immediate hearings, review the state’s controlled substance laws and examine how manufacturers, distributors and retailers could be held accountable when their actions put lives at risk.
