GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (BFMG) — The parents of 5-year-old Saylor Hayes will remain behind bars after a Georgetown County magistrate denied bond Saturday morning on charges stemming from the circumstances surrounding their daughter’s disappearance and death.
John Herb Hayes III, (70), and Geordyn Nichole Hayes, (31), appeared before Georgetown County Magistrate Steven Pop for their first South Carolina court appearance after being extradited from Tennessee a day earlier.
Both are charged with unlawfully placing a child at risk or causing harm, or willfully abandoning a child, following Saylor’s disappearance from the Pawleys Island area and the discovery of her body in the Waccamaw River on August 31, 2026.
During Saturday’s hearing, attorneys representing John Hayes asked the court to grant him a personal recognizance bond. His attorneys argued that he was not a flight risk or a danger to the community and said he wanted to be with his family ahead of Saylor’s funeral. Geordyn Hayes did not have an attorney representing her during the hearing.
Pop rejected the request and denied bond for both parents, citing the seriousness of the allegations and their prior histories.
“Respectfully, there’s no way on this earth that I’m going to grant PR bond,” Pop said during the hearing, according to reports from the courtroom. “That’s not going to happen on my watch.”

Pop went on to cite what he described as the “egregious nature” of the charges and advised the attorneys to examine the defendants’ prior histories before denying bond for both.
The couple had been booked into the Georgetown County Detention Center (GCDC) Friday afternoon after being extradited from Carter County, Tennessee. They were arrested there September 1st on warrants issued by the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO).
Their arrests followed an extensive search for Saylor that began after the 5-year-old was reported missing from the Pawleys Island area.
Authorities have alleged that Saylor was left without appropriate supervision near water and was not wearing her Project Lifesaver tracking transmitter when she disappeared. Investigators have also alleged her parents knew she was not wearing the device while search teams initially attempted to use Project Lifesaver equipment to locate her.
Saylor’s body was recovered from the Waccamaw River the following morning.
An autopsy conducted Friday at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) revealed pulmonary edema and no visible signs of internal or external trauma. Georgetown County Coroner Chase Ridgeway has said Saylor’s cause and manner of death remain unknown pending additional testing, with a final autopsy report expected in approximately eight to 10 weeks.
John and Geordyn Hayes remain in custody at the GCDC following Saturday’s bond decision.
Their next court appearance is scheduled for November, 19 2026.
The GCSO has said the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Saylor’s disappearance and death remains ongoing.
