INDIANAPOLIS (BFMG) — A man is accused of trying to smuggle a live smoke grenade onto a plane by hiding it in a jar of peanut butter at Indianapolis International Airport, federal officials said.
The incident happened June 25, when a checked bag triggered an alarm and was pulled aside for additional screening, according to the Transportation Security Administration. Inside the luggage, officers found two live smoke grenades — one of them concealed inside a jar of peanut butter.
The passenger allegedly told officers that a friend advised him he could sneak the smoke grenades through checked baggage screening by placing them in peanut butter. Officials did not immediately say why he wanted to bring the grenades on the flight or where the friend got that information.
TSA guidance allows peanut butter in checked baggage, but containers larger than 3.4 ounces are prohibited in carry-on bags because it is considered a liquid or gel.
