CINCINNATI (BFMG) — Police have identified the suspect killed in a police-involved shooting in East Price Hill as 18-year-old Ryan Hinton, following a chase involving a stolen vehicle on Thursday morning. The shooting, which unfolded in a matter of seconds, remains under investigation.
Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge provided new details Friday about the rapid sequence of events that led to the fatal shooting and subsequent arrests.
The incident began around 10 a.m. Thursday when officers with the Cincinnati Police Department’s fugitive apprehension unit responded to a report of a stolen Kia parked in an apartment complex lot on Warsaw Avenue. The vehicle had been reported stolen earlier that day in Edgewood, Kentucky, and GPS tracking helped the owner alert authorities to its location.
As two undercover officers positioned themselves near the vehicle, uniformed officers moved in. According to Theetge, four individuals fled from the car. At least one was reportedly armed.
Body camera footage released Friday captured the brief pursuit. Officers can be heard shouting, “He’s got a gun,” moments before multiple gunshots were fired. The suspect, later identified as Hinton, reportedly slipped and dropped the weapon. As he ran between a pair of dumpsters, an officer encountered him and fired four to five shots.
Police recovered a firearm with an extended magazine near Hinton, as well as another magazine in his pocket. A second gun was found inside the stolen vehicle.
Theetge said the entire encounter, from the time the suspects exited the vehicle to the shooting, lasted approximately six seconds.
Two other suspects — identified Friday in court documents as Deanthony Bullocks, 19, and Jurell Austin, 18 — were apprehended after a search involving K-9 units and drones. Bullocks is being held on a $40,000 bond, and Austin’s bond is set at $50,000. Both face charges of obstructing official business and receiving stolen property. They were arraigned Friday morning.
A fourth suspect, identified as 18-year-old Cynsere Grigsby, was arrested Saturday. Additional details about his charges have not been released.
The officers involved in the shooting have not been publicly identified, in accordance with Marsy’s Law. One officer has been with the department since 2001, the other since 2014. Both are members of the department’s fugitive apprehension squad.
Chief Theetge said the officer who fired stated during interviews that Hinton pointed the gun at him after emerging from between the dumpsters and that he feared for his life. Theetge confirmed Hinton was struck twice, in the chest and arm.
“There’s no indication the suspect fired his weapon,” Theetge said. “But our officers are trained to stop the threat. We don’t expect them to wait until they’re shot at.”
In a tragic development connected to the incident, Hinton’s father, Rodney Hinton Jr., allegedly struck and killed a Hamilton County sheriff’s deputy with his vehicle Friday near the University of Cincinnati. Hinton Jr. has been charged with aggravated murder and remains in custody without bond. Authorities are continuing to investigate both incidents.
