Manhattan, N.Y. (BFMG) — Authorities in New York City are conducting a widespread search after the CEO of United Healthcare was fatally shot Wednesday morning as he walked to an investor conference in Midtown.
Police received a 911 call at 6:36 a.m. reporting a shooting outside the Hilton hotel at 1335 Avenue of the Americas. Officers arrived at the scene 12 minutes later to find Brian Thompson, 50, with gunshot wounds to his back and leg. Thompson was transported to Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m., officials said.
Thompson was scheduled to deliver remarks at an investor conference beginning at 8 a.m. at the Hilton, across the street from his hotel. Surveillance footage captured a suspect arriving on foot about five minutes before Thompson left his hotel and began walking alone toward the conference venue.
The suspect was described as wearing a light brown or cream-colored jacket, a black face mask, black-and-white sneakers, and a distinct gray backpack. After the shooting, the individual fled on foot and was later seen riding an e-bike into Central Park via Center Drive, authorities said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
