Sullivan’s Island, S.C. (BFMG) — A widespread manhunt is underway on Sullivan’s Island following a hit-and-run incident that injured three pedestrians Wednesday afternoon, including two children. Law enforcement officials say the suspect, who fled on foot, is armed and remains at large.
The suspect has been identified as Justin Collin Adams, described as a white, heavyset man in his 40s, balding with facial hair. He was last seen wearing black shorts and a red or burgundy shirt, and was reported to be carrying a knife. Authorities believe Adams is still on the island.
The crash occurred around 12:50 p.m. at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, where a vehicle drove onto the church property and struck three pedestrians. One child was treated at the scene and released, while the second child and an adult were transported to a nearby hospital. There has been no official update on their current conditions.
Following the crash, Adams reportedly fled the scene on foot and was last spotted along Jasper Boulevard between Station 30 and Station 32.
In response, law enforcement agencies launched a house-by-house grid search of the island, while also searching every vehicle attempting to leave. Police have warned residents to remain vigilant and to avoid approaching anyone matching the suspect’s description.
“This is a coordinated operation involving multiple agencies,” said Sullivan’s Island Police Chief Glenn Meadows, adding that the FBI, SLED, U.S. Marshals Service, DNR, NCIS, the State Ports Authority, and numerous local police departments are assisting in the search.
A vehicle checkpoint has been established on the Ben Sawyer Bridge, and Jasper Boulevard and Middle Street eastbound at Station 32 remain closed near the Breach Inlet Bridge due to heavy law enforcement presence.
Authorities are asking the public to avoid the area and to contact 911 immediately if they see anyone matching the suspect’s description.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
