COLUMBIA, S.C. (BFMG) — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has launched a new program offering free Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) courses across the state, part of the requirements established under the recently enacted Constitutional Carry Bill H. 3594. These free classes are available to South Carolina residents or property owners in every county, with at least two sessions offered per month.
The program aims to improve public access to firearms education while maintaining the same rigorous standards as other CWP courses offered statewide. SLED has partnered with certified instructors and local law enforcement agencies to deliver the courses, ensuring accessibility and consistency for participants.
Governor Henry McMaster praised the initiative, noting that access to firearms education is critical in ensuring the responsible use and safety of concealed weapons within the state. “This program ensures that residents are better equipped to exercise their rights under the law,” McMaster said.
Eligibility Requirements
Participants must meet certain criteria to enroll. They must:
- Possess a South Carolina driver’s license or own real property in the state
- Be at least 18 years old
- Provide a handgun and 25 rounds of ammunition for the practical exam (rental arrangements may be made with instructors)
- Register for the course in advance through SLED’s online portal
Notably, students are not required to take the course in the county where they reside, giving residents flexibility in scheduling.
Course Details
The course provides at least four hours of instruction on fundamental firearm skills, including:
- Firearms safety and handling
- The fundamentals of marksmanship
- Nomenclature and parts of firearms
- Self-defense laws in South Carolina
- Legal responsibilities of carrying a concealed weapon
The class concludes with two assessments: a 50-question multiple-choice exam and a 25-round shooting qualification. A minimum score of 70% is required on both to earn a CWP.
This free program offers the instructional portion of the CWP course at no cost, though students must still meet the standard state requirements for background checks and licensing fees for their permits.
How to Register
Residents can register for the class by visiting the SLED website at www.sled.sc.gov/cwp_courses. After selecting a county and class date, participants will receive an email confirming their attendance and class details one week before the session.
A Milestone in Firearms Education
SLED Director Mark Keel emphasized the importance of public access to proper firearms training. “This program not only offers practical instruction but also ensures compliance with our state’s gun laws, making South Carolina safer for everyone,” he said.
While this program expands access to education, it does not replace other existing CWP classes offered by certified instructors throughout the state. Rather, it adds another option for residents seeking high-quality training at no cost.
For additional questions or assistance, participants can contact SLED at cwptraining@sled.sc.gov.
This initiative highlights South Carolina’s commitment to ensuring both public safety and responsible firearm ownership under its new Constitutional Carry legislation.
