PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. (BFMG) — As the Table Rock Complex wildfires continue to incinerate thousands of acres across South Carolina’s lush Upstate mountain range, officials have announced the arrest of three individuals linked to the fire’s origin. The South Carolina Forestry Commission (SCFC) confirmed that Nyzaire Jah-Neiz Marsh, 19, of Taylors, along with Tristan Tyler, 18, and Isaac Wilson, 18, both of Greenville, were charged with negligently allowing fire to spread to lands or property of another. A fourth suspect, a minor, was also charged but released into parental custody.

Human Error Leads to Multi-Agency Response

The wildfire, which ignited on March 21 during a search operation for a missing hiker Stephanie Womack, which remains to be an ongoing missing person’s case in Picken County. The search group evacuated seven hikers, including the teens, and questioned them about the origins of the fire which has consumed over 13,500 acres. Investigators determined the fire was caused by improperly discarded cigarette butts on a hiking trail. Authorities allege the suspects, engaged in smoking activities, failed to extinguish their cigarettes entirely, leading to what has easily become one of the most devasting wildfires in the state’s history.

Containment Efforts and Ongoing Risks

As of April 2, containment efforts have made significant progress, with the Table Rock Fire now 68% contained and the Persimmon Ridge Fire at 74%. Despite this improvement, officials warn that interior heat and hotspots remain a concern. Firefighters are actively patrolling fire perimeters, removing hazardous snags, and conducting mop-up operations. Infrared mapping has identified a few lingering hotspots, but overall, containment lines appear secure.

With weather conditions improving, the State Forester’s Burning Ban has been lifted for the remaining five counties—Greenville, Pickens, Oconee, Spartanburg, and Horry—allowing for controlled outdoor burning. However, officials urge extreme caution, as April historically presents heightened wildfire risks. Any individuals who allow a fire to escape will face legal consequences. Residents planning to burn yard debris or conduct controlled burns must follow notification protocols outlined on the SCFC website.

Collaborations and Costs

The massive wildfire response has involved over 540 personnel from local, state, and federal agencies, with an estimated firefighting cost already surpassing $2 million. The effort is being led by the Southern Area Blue Complex Incident Management Team in coordination with the SCFC, North Carolina Forest Service, and multiple emergency management divisions. The South Carolina Firefighter Mobilization resources have now demobilized, but key personnel, including the SC-HART extraction team, remain on standby for emergency rescues.

What's Next?

While containment efforts have improved, full suppression of the fire remains a priority. Rain in the forecast is expected to aid firefighting efforts, though officials remain vigilant against flare-ups. With all evacuation orders now lifted, affected residents are urged to stay informed, avoid restricted areas, and exercise extreme caution with any outdoor activities involving fire.
