CHANDLER, Ind. (BFMG) — A woman accused of stealing a police cruiser and leading authorities on a high-speed chase through Kentucky and Indiana was shot by police after allegedly brandishing a sword during a dramatic encounter in Chandler, officials said.
According to law enforcement, the woman — later identified as Devillez — was seen wearing a motorcycle helmet and allegedly pulled a sword on officers after crashing a stolen police vehicle into a ditch in Chandler, Indiana.
The incident began when authorities in Kentucky reported the theft of a police cruiser according to WTOK. The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call indicating Devillez was driving the stolen cruiser across the William H. Natcher Bridge into Indiana.
Police briefly lost contact with the vehicle until a Rockport Police officer spotted it traveling southbound on U.S. 231. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but Devillez allegedly continued at speeds exceeding 120 mph, according to Indiana State Police.
The pursuit ended when Devillez crashed into an open field off U.S. 60 near Terminal Road. She fled on foot but was quickly confronted by officers. At that point, police said, Devillez exited the vehicle and began waving a sword at one of the officers.
An Indiana State Police trooper shot Devillez at least once during the confrontation. She continued to flee but was eventually subdued with a Taser and taken into custody.
The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office reported that Devillez suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her chest and was bleeding heavily when taken into custody. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she remains in custody and is receiving medical treatment.
Once released, Devillez will be booked into the Daviess County Detention Center.
Court records show Devillez was previously charged with seven felonies in November in Lawrence County, Indiana, including attempted murder, battery, and criminal confinement.
The investigation remains ongoing.
