GREENVILLE, S.C. (BFMG) – The Greenville Police Department has established a “Safe Exchange Zone” at its Public Safety Complex, located at 204 Halton Road, offering the community a secure location for child custody exchanges, private property transactions, and e-commerce meetups.
The department recently announced the initiative on its Facebook page, highlighting the space as a free community service designed to mitigate safety risks associated with in-person exchanges, particularly those facilitated through online platforms.
“This Safe Exchange Zone provides peace of mind for anyone conducting child custody exchanges or meeting buyers or sellers from online transactions,” the department said in the post.
The designated area is monitored 24/7 by video surveillance and is well-lit, adding an extra layer of security for individuals involved in these interactions.
Tackling Transactional Crimes
The addition of the Safe Exchange Zone aligns Greenville with a growing number of cities addressing the rise in transactional crimes and safety concerns tied to online marketplaces. Nationwide, cases of robbery, fraud, and other crimes have been linked to individuals meeting strangers for purchases or sales arranged online.
In response to the new service, Greenville County Sheriff’s Office representatives noted they do not currently have a similar designated location but recommend residents utilize the parking lot at their office or other public, well-lit spaces, in the visibility of others.
Staying Safe This Holiday Season
The holiday season often brings an increase in e-commerce transactions. To further protect yourself, police suggest a few tips.
- Meet in daylight hours: If possible, schedule exchanges during daytime to increase visibility and minimize risks.
- Bring a friend: Having someone accompany you can deter potential threats.
- Verify payment methods: For transactions involving cash, ensure the bills are genuine, and avoid checks or money orders unless you are confident in their legitimacy.
Reporting Transactional Crimes
If you encounter a scam or become a victim of a crime during an exchange, Greenville Police encourage you to report the incident immediately. For non-emergency situations, call the police department’s main line at (864) 271-5333. Online fraud and scams can also be reported to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
The Safe Exchange Zone is now available for use and serves as a reminder of the department’s commitment to fostering a safe community. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this free service for their next exchange.
