ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. (BFMG) — A 28-year-old Orangeburg County man is facing multiple charges after deputies say he killed a puppy by throwing it into a fire during a domestic dispute.
The Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that Desmond Brown has been charged with ill treatment of animals and second-degree domestic violence. He is also facing charges of possession of two stolen vehicles and receiving stolen goods related to a suspected chop shop operation.
Disturbing Allegations
Deputies said they received a call around 10 a.m. Wednesday from a woman reporting a domestic dispute involving her daughter and Brown at a home near Norway, S.C. Around the same time, authorities were alerted to a Facebook Live video allegedly showing Brown throwing a pit bull puppy into a fire according to WLTX.
According to investigators, the daughter had been burning Brown’s clothes during the argument. When deputies arrived at the scene, they questioned both Brown and the daughter about the puppy’s fate. Authorities said the pair initially gave conflicting accounts of what had happened.
Shortly after, the daughter told deputies that Brown had thrown the puppy into the flames. She claimed she was unaware of where Brown had taken the animal after the incident. Investigators later discovered the puppy had died.
“I’ve seen some extremely despicable and disgusting things in my career,” Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said in a statement. “But this is one of the worst.”
Additional Findings
While searching the property, deputies said they discovered two stolen vehicles. Investigators were told Brown had brought the vehicles to the location. Some of the vehicles were missing parts, leading authorities to suspect the operation was connected to a chop shop.
Legal Proceedings
Brown was denied bond during an initial court appearance.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out additional charges.
“This kind of cruelty is not only unacceptable but speaks to a deeper disregard for life and the law,” Sheriff Ravenell said.
