NEW YORK (BFMG) — A 23-year-old mother died and her infant daughter was critically injured after police say they were pushed from a 15th-floor balcony at a Bronx apartment building early Tuesday, according to WABC.
New York City police officers responded around 3:30 a.m. and found Nathaly Ramirez and her 8-month-old daughter on the ground outside the building.
Both were taken to a hospital, where Ramirez was pronounced dead. Her daughter remained in critical condition.
According to WABC, officials said Ramirez held her daughter in a tight embrace during the fall, which may have helped cushion the baby’s impact.
Police are investigating Ramirez’s death as a homicide. Investigators spent hours examining the balcony, searching for surveillance footage and seeking additional witnesses.
Authorities are also looking to speak with Ramirez’s ex-boyfriend. The information provided did not identify him as a suspect.
Friends described Ramirez as a devoted mother who was happy raising her daughter.
“She was very happy to be a mom. She’s a new mom, and the baby was very happy,” one friend said.
The investigation remains ongoing. No arrests have been announced.
