BATON ROUGE, La. (BFMG) — Authorities believe the body of a missing 15-year-old Baton Rouge boy was dumped in a city landfill, officials said Friday.
Mayor-President Sid Edwards said investigators have determined that Ja’Derrius Minnieweather’s remains were taken to the North landfill on a trash collection route. His body has not been recovered.
Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse said the FBI is expected to assist BRPD and other local agencies in the search, which will treat the landfill as an active crime scene. Officials urged the public to stay away from the area.
“Knowing the sheer complexity before us, we sadly know success is not guaranteed,” Morse said.
Baton Rouge Fire Chief Michael Kimble compared the landfill recovery effort to the search for identifying details after the collapse of the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001. He said investigators will wear full, insulated protective suits and respiratory equipment while working in the debris.
Edwards said the physical search inside the landfill is expected to begin around July 13.
The announcement came less than a week after 51-year-old Maurice Parms was arrested on murder charges in connection with Minnieweather’s death. Parms was initially taken into custody June 10 after police found messages between him and a 16-year-old girl while investigating Minnieweather’s disappearance.
Despite Parms’ arrest, Minnieweather’s body has not been found. Authorities say the search for his remains has already covered more than 1,000 acres.
