ERIE, Pa. (BFMG) — City officials in Erie, Pennsylvania, have confirmed that nine people died in Friday evening’s mass shooting near 7th and Perry Streets, while releasing new information that contradicts earlier reports suggesting some of the victims were killed during a prolonged police standoff.
In a statement issued Saturday, October 10, 2026, the City of Erie and Erie Police Department (EPD) confirmed that investigators determined all nine victims died before officers arrived at the scene.
The clarification comes after initial reports suggested additional gunshots were fired while police surrounded a residence at 722 Perry Street, where authorities later discovered multiple victims, including children.
According to city officials, no shots were fired after officers arrived.
Instead, authorities explained that sounds initially believed to be gunfire during the police response were actually flash-bang devices deployed by tactical officers.
Investigators also confirmed that police responded within minutes of receiving a ShotSpotter alert, a gunfire detection system used to notify law enforcement of possible shootings.
“The deaths were not the result of any prolonged standoff or delay in police action,” city officials said in Saturday’s statement.
Authorities explained that responding officers initially had limited information about the situation, including whether the suspected gunman remained inside the residence or continued to pose a threat.
Police continued assessing the circumstances, gathering information and seeking a search warrant before entering the home.
Friday’s shooting began around 5 p.m. near the intersection of 7th and Perry Streets.
Initial reports indicated that two women were found dead outside a residence, while additional victims were discovered inside the home.
Erie News Now previously reported that nine people were killed, including two children and the suspected gunman, who was discovered with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Saturday’s statement from city officials confirms the total number of fatalities but does not provide additional information about the identities of those killed or a possible motive.
The City of Erie acknowledged that inaccurate information had circulated in the hours following the shooting and urged residents to avoid spreading unverified claims.
“Unverified reports and speculation can deepen the pain experienced by grieving families, create unnecessary fear, and potentially put responding officers and members of the public at risk,” the city said.
Officials also acknowledged the emotional impact the shooting has had on the community.
“Our hearts remain with the victims, their loved ones, and all those affected by this devastating loss of life,” the statement continued.
A press conference is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, October 10, when city officials and Erie police are expected to provide additional information about the shooting, the timeline of events and the law enforcement response.
The city also announced that crisis counseling services are available to residents affected by the tragedy.
Anyone seeking emotional support can contact Crisis Services at 814-456-2024. Assistance is available by telephone or in person.
The investigation remains ongoing.
This is a developing story, stay tuned for the latest.
