WALHALLA, S.C. (BFMG) — A 15-year-old has been detained and charged with involuntary manslaughter after another teenager was fatally shot in the head Thursday morning at a home in Oconee County, according to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO).
Investigators said the shooting occurred when the suspect, also (15), was attempting to move a firearm from underneath a pillow.
According to deputies, the gun discharged while the teenager was handling it, striking the victim, who was also 15-years-old, in the head.
The victim later died from the injuries.
Authorities said preliminary findings indicate the shooting was accidental. However, investigators determined the teenager handling the firearm acted negligently, leading to the involuntary manslaughter charge.
The OCSO confirmed the juvenile suspect has been detained but said their identity will not be released because of their age.
Deputies said the teenager will be transported to the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC).
Investigators have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the relationship between the two teenagers or how the firearm came to be inside the home.
The investigation remains ongoing.
