COLUMBIA, S.C. (BFMG) — The University of South Carolina said Thursday there is no evidence of an active shooter at this time, but police continue to search affected buildings after a campus alert initially warned students of a possible threat.
Students and staff were urged to continue sheltering in place until an all clear is given. The alert advised people to avoid the area of the Thomas Cooper Library, evacuate if safe to do so, or barricade themselves inside secure locations according to Carolina Alert.
“Defend yourself if you encounter the suspect,” the alert stated, adding that public safety officials are on the scene and directing the response.
Authorities described the suspect as a white male, about 6 feet tall, wearing black pants.
No injuries have been reported.
