SOUTH FULTON, Ga.(BFMG) — A South Fulton Police Department officer has been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged sexual assault that investigators say occurred while he was on duty.
Authorities confirmed that Patrol Officer Micheal Shealey Cockran, 30, was taken into custody on Tuesday following an internal investigation by the department. Cockran faces charges of sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority and violation of oath of office.
According to police, the alleged incident took place on the evening of March 21, 2026, while Cockran was responding to a domestic dispute call. Investigators say the victim initially left the original scene, and the officer later located the victim at a different location, where the sexual assault allegedly occurred.
Upon learning of the incident, South Fulton Police said they took “immediate and decisive action.” The department secured a warrant, arrested the officer, relieved him of duty, and launched a comprehensive criminal investigation.
“No one is above the law, not even those who wear this badge,” the department said in a public statement. “The actions in this case represent a serious and deplorable violation of the law, our policies, and the trust that this community has placed in us.”
Interim Public Safety Director Dr. Cedric Alexander condemned the alleged conduct, emphasizing that the department will not tolerate actions that betray the community’s trust.
“The South Fulton Police Department will not tolerate conduct that betrays this community, and we will not allow anyone to tarnish the integrity of this agency or the work of the many officers who serve with honor,” Alexander said.
Investigators have contacted the victim and are conducting a full review of available evidence, including patrol vehicle camera footage. As part of their review, the department is examining Cockran’s prior interactions to determine whether any additional individuals may have been impacted.
Anyone with information or who believes they may have had an encounter with the suspect is encouraged to come forward.
Officials stressed that the investigation remains active and ongoing, and the department has vowed to maintain transparency and accountability as the case proceeds.
