BALTIMORE (BFMG) — A man who broke into a relative’s home, shot a police officer and took two women hostage near a Baltimore synagogue was fatally shot by a police sniper Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
Police said the suspect — whose name has not been released — broke into a home on Park Heights Avenue in northwest Baltimore and held two women at gunpoint. One woman escaped by jumping out of a window, while the gunman kept his weapon pointed at the second hostage’s head, according to officials.
A responding Baltimore Police Department officer was shot in the leg during the standoff. His partner applied a tourniquet that likely saved his life, police said. The 36-year-old officer, a 13-year veteran of the force, was taken to a hospital and is conscious and expected to recover.
Officers surrounded the home as the suspect fired multiple shots. A police sniper shot and killed the man while he continued to fire at officers, Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said at a news conference according to the New York Post.
Police urged residents to avoid the area for several hours as the incident unfolded. The home is on the same block as the Agudath Israel of Baltimore orthodox synagogue.
