GREENVILLE, S.C. (BFMG) — In a shocking and emotional day in court, Zachary Hughes took the stand in his own defense, admitting he brutally stabbed Christina Parcell on October 13, 2021, in what he claimed was an act to protect a child he believed was in grave danger. His testimony painted a chilling picture of manipulation, obsession, and a spiraling descent into violence—culminating in Parcell’s murder.

As Hughes detailed the lead-up to the killing, authorities took swift action outside the courtroom, arresting John Joey Mello, the father of Parcell’s child, on charges of Accessory Before the Fact to a Felony and Solicitation to Commit a Felony. The arrest came as Hughes testified that Mello repeatedly suggested that Parcell should be killed and even offered him $10,000 to carry out the murder.

Hughes Details His Relationship with Mello and Growing Paranoia

During his testimony, Hughes traced his path from a Juilliard-trained pianist to an aspiring Marine officer who was sidelined by injury, ultimately leading him back to Greenville. It was there in 2020 that he met John Mello, a charismatic but deeply paranoid man, who convinced Hughes that Parcell was a threat to their young daughter, Aida.

Hughes described Mello’s growing obsession with Parcell, repeatedly telling him that she was “killing my little girl” and that “the spark was dying in her eyes.” Initially, Hughes dismissed Mello’s concerns as dramatic, but after witnessing video call visitations between Parcell and Aida, he said he saw a stark change in the child’s demeanor. He described her as “morose” and “depressed,” pretending to be fine while speaking to her father.

According to Hughes, this mirrored his own childhood experiences with his adopted sister, Grace, whom he described as a psychopathic manipulator who tore his family apart. He said his experiences with Grace made him believe that Parcell could be equally dangerous, and his testimony suggested that Mello carefully weaponized this fear against him.

Mello Allegedly Solicits Hughes to Kill Parcell

Hughes testified that Mello first asked him to kill Parcell in exchange for $5,000. He said he was “shocked and insulted” and refused. Two to three weeks later, Mello doubled the offer to $10,000, telling Hughes that if he truly believed Aida was in danger, he should act. Hughes told the jury he had no interest in money, but that he would consider murder if he became convinced that killing Parcell was the only way to save Aida from abuse.

In the weeks leading up to the murder, Hughes said he went to Italy with Mello for 3-4 weeks, where Mello continued to reinforce that Parcell was harming their child. He also claimed that Parcell threatened him directly during a video call, taking the phone, sliding her finger across her throat, and glaring at the camera.

Hughes testified that Mello later forwarded him an email from a biker gang that Bradly Post, Parcell’s fiancé, was allegedly involved with. The email stated that Post was “offering a lot of money” to have Mello harmed.

Hughes’ Attempts to Involve DSS and His Escalation Toward Murder

By June 2021, Hughes testified that he was “absolutely convinced” that Parcell was sexually abusing Aida. He went as far as calling DSS to report seeing verbal and physical abuse, though he admitted under oath that he fabricated these claims to try and create an opportunity for Aida to meet with social workers away from her mother.

“I had lost faith that anyone was going to save Aida from Christina Parcell,” Hughes told the court.

He also took matters into his own hands by mailing escort ads of Parcell to various people, hoping to expose what he believed was the “truth.” He testified that he saw the images as public property because to his knowledge, Parcell had posted them online.

The Murder of Christina Parcell

By October, Hughes said the burden was too much to bear. He knew he had to act before leaving for a prolonged cruise ship piano performance.

  • He purchased a .22 caliber revolver and a knife from a local gun shop a month prior.
  • He mapped out backroads to Parcell’s home in Canebrake.
  • He initially planned to kill her on October 12 but backed out due to a “gut feeling.”
  • Mello informed Hughes of Parcell’s schedule, ensuring she would be home alone on the morning of October 13.

On October 13, 2021, Hughes arrived at 122 Canebrake just after 9 a.m., carrying a gift-wrapped box with a gun inside, a bouquet of roses, and a backpack. Disguising himself as a delivery person, he rang the doorbell and asked for Lutina, Christina’s sister, to confirm if Parcell was alone.

Upon confirmation, Hughes said he handed Parcell the roses, retrieved his gun, and ordered her inside at gunpoint. His original plan was to shoot her, but the makeshift suppressor he had built didn’t fit the revolver. Afraid that the gunshot would be heard, he switched to the knife.

Hughes attempted to render Parcell unconscious with a strike to the head but failed. A struggle ensued, causing the roses to scatter across the floor. Hughes then stabbed Parcell multiple times, stopping only when she ceased to struggle.

After the attack, Hughes attempted to clean up the crime scene, wiping Parcell’s hands with paint thinner and dragging her body away from the door to avoid detection.

Before leaving, Hughes looked at himself in the mirror, saw a scratch on his face, and prayed:
“I believe what I did was the right thing. If it is Your will that I be caught, then I will turn myself in.”

He then exited through the front door.

Hughes’ Explosive Courtroom Declaration and the State’s Fury

In a shocking moment, Hughes declared to the jury that the State was hiding proof of Parcell’s alleged abuse of A.M.

“A.M. would be safe from the sexual abuse that her mother was perpetuating on her, & there’s proof to that that the State is hiding from you.”

The prosecution immediately erupted in fury, objecting loudly and demanding the judge instruct Hughes to stop speaking. The courtroom descended into chaos, with the jury looking visibly shaken.

John Mello Arrested Amid Hughes’ Testimony

As Hughes testified, authorities took swift action against John Joey Mello, charging him with Accessory Before the Fact to a Felony and Solicitation to Commit a Felony. Mello was arrested at his Greenville home by the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Team.

Mello’s bond hearing is set for 9:30 p.m. EST, where prosecutors are expected to argue for his continued detention.
