GREENVILLE, S.C. (BFMG) — The fourth day of testimony in the trial of Zachary Hughes, accused of the brutal murder of Christina Parcell, focused on digital forensics, forensic analysis, and a disturbing pattern of harassment that prosecutors say was orchestrated by John Mello, Parcell’s ex and the father of her child.
Testimony detailed a chilling timeline, incriminating WhatsApp messages, and an unsettling history of calculated digital attacks, all leading up to Parcell’s gruesome murder on October 13, 2021.
Escort Ad Bust or Calculated Smear Campaign
The prosecution called GCSO Investigator Daniel Bevill, who examined a series of explicit photographs of Parcell that were mailed to multiple individuals in the summer of 2021.
- The nude photos were distributed under the alias “Caroline Warren.”
- Bevill confirmed that Parcell’s name never appeared on any of the postings.
- The ads were submitted on escort websites that later disappeared, redirecting to a different site when Bevill attempted to access them.
- Parcell had reached out to Bevill directly after discovering the photos had been mailed to her colleagues, friends, and professional contacts.
Bevill, who previously worked in the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Unit, had encountered both Parcell and her fiancé, Bradley Post, during an investigation in 2018. By 2021, Parcell contacted him again after recognizing that Mello was the only person who had access to the photos.
Postal Inspector Mike Nicholson was brought in to analyze the distribution of the mailings. His investigation revealed:
- Five envelopes were postmarked from Greenville, S.C.
- One was processed through Knoxville, Tenn.
Prosecutors emphasized that the mailing locations would later align with Hughes’ phone activity, suggesting he was the one physically mailing the packages.
The Foundation of the Fury
GCSO Master Deputy Blake Wolfe testified about the hundreds of emails exchanged between Hughes and Mello, uncovering a disturbing pattern of harassment.
One key email, dated May 16, 2021, was forwarded to Hughes from a Proton Mail account claiming to be “Mullen Investigations,” an alleged private investigative firm.
- However, SLED (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division) confirmed that no such company existed.
- Proton Mail, an encrypted email service based in Switzerland, does not comply with U.S. search warrants, making it nearly impossible to trace.
- The email contained the same escort ad that had been mailed to various people in Parcell’s life.
Investigators later confirmed that Mello’s WhatsApp number appeared in his email signature, further linking him to the smear campaign.
Hughes and Mello referred to Parcell in hundreds of emails as “Sweet Caroline Warren”, reinforcing their obsessive fixation on destroying her reputation.
Digital Footprints: Mapping Parcell's Murder
FBI Supervisory Special Agent Matthew Wilde walked jurors through a PowerPoint presentation reconstructing Hughes’ movements in the months leading up to Parcell’s murder:
- June 30, 2021 (1:24 AM): Hughes’ phone pinged in downtown Greenville, where one of the explicit packages was postmarked.
- July 4-8, 2021: Phone pings in Knoxville, Tenn., the same timeframe a package was postmarked from there on July 8.
- October 11, 2021: Hughes’ phone was detected at Indian Flats, where a trail camera later captured Hughes walking near a remote residence.
- October 12, 2021: Hughes’ phone activity showed he was at Mello’s house, his own home, and then back at Indian Flats.
- October 13, 2021 (Day of the Murder): Hughes’ phone was in airplane mode for an extended period, but when reactivated:
- 2:22 PM & 2:32 PM: The phone came back online, suggesting Hughes had taken it out of airplane mode.
- 3:50 PM: Hughes had a 1 hour and 20-minute WhatsApp call with Mello.
- 7:15 PM: Hughes made a 19-minute WhatsApp call to Mello.
- 1:17 PM: Hughes’ phone auto-connected to the WINNWIFI network at Indian Flats.
Forensic Analysis of Physical Activity
GCSO Investigator James Perry analyzed Hughes’ phone movement data and physical activity:
- 4:30 AM: Hughes’ phone was plugged in and unlocked.
- 5:00 AM – 6:00 AM: 77 steps recorded, covering 55.81 meters.
- 7:42 AM – 11:34 AM: Zero recorded phone activity. Prosecutors suggest this was the window when Parcell was murdered.
- 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM: Hughes took 1,708 steps, covering over 1,090 meters at a high rate of speed.
- 2:52 PM: The last known WhatsApp message exchange between Hughes and Mello.
A Custody Battle to the Death
The prosecution’s theory that Mello wanted Parcell dead to secure custody of their child became clearer during Sgt. Jarrad Sparkman’s testimony.
Sparkman highlighted:
- April 1, 2021: Mello sent Hughes a message instructing him to “harass the shit out of her.”
- May 24, 2021: Hughes rode his bike to mail the packages instead of using his truck to avoid cameras.
- October 13, 2021: Mello sent Hughes a deleted, scrambled WhatsApp message at 11:36 AM, just before Parcell was murdered.
- October 13, 2021: At 2:53 PM, Mello responded to Hughes’ message with “cool”—coinciding with their hour-long call.
Sparkman directly stated that Mello’s surest way to win custody was ensuring Parcell was dead.
When asked to summarize the evidence, Sparkman presented a detailed timeline from October 11-13, 2021, piecing together Hughes’ movements leading up to the murder.
