NEW YORK (BFMG) — The family of a 93-year-old Queens woman is demanding answers after alleging that a Jamaica funeral home cremated their loved one despite her documented wish to be buried in Guyana beside her grandmother. The family says Euvy Rodney’s ashes were handed over only after repeated questions, and they now want the funeral home held accountable.
Rodney’s relatives, attorneys and civil rights advocates made the allegations during a press conference outside J. Foster Phillips Funeral Home in Jamaica, Queens, according to local reports. Rev. Kevin McCall told ABC 7 News the family was “robbed” of dignity, while attorneys said they are investigating and may file a lawsuit.
“We have lost our mom twice. We have lost her in death. We have lost her body. We have no closure to our mother,” Christine Weaver said, according to the report. The family said Rodney’s death certificate showed burial was her clear final wish, not cremation.
The family also said it plans to hold a symbolic funeral for Rodney in Queens. The funeral home did not immediately answer questions from reporters, and a man who came to the front door declined to comment, according to the reports
