MCBEE, S.C. (BFMG) — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has charged a McBee Police Department captain and a Chesterfield County woman in connection with a case involving suspected sexual abuse of a child.
SLED said Capt. Gregory P. Block, 40, was arrested Thursday and charged with misconduct in office and obstruction of justice. Janece Jorden Curtiss, 34, was also arrested Thursday and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child and obstruction of justice.
Both were booked into the Chesterfield County Detention Center. The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office will prosecute the case.
According to arrest affidavits, Curtiss took a child to a medical center on Oct. 14, 2024, where staff observed bleeding that a physician believed could have been caused by sexual abuse. Medical personnel contacted the McBee Police Department and the S.C. Department of Social Services (DSS).
Curtiss allegedly told staff the child’s injuries occurred when the child fell into a refrigerator while home alone, and later told Block a registered sex offender had been loitering nearby.
In an initial call to DSS, Block reported that Curtiss had left the child unsupervised and had coached the child on what to say. He also said medical staff told him the injuries did not match her explanation and asked DSS to respond.
The examining physician arranged for the child to be seen at another medical center for sedation and further assessment but, after speaking with Block and Curtiss, discharged the child with the expectation the pair would transport the child for additional treatment.
No additional details were immediately available Thursday, and attempts to reach the McBee Police Department were unsuccessful.
