ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ala. (BFMG) — A Moody police officer was terminated for misusing the department’s license plate reader system, according to Police Chief Reece Smith of the Moody Police Department.
Smith said the officer was fired July 16 following an internal investigation that began July 10 into an alleged violation of department policy governing license plate readers, commonly known as Flock cameras.
The officer has not been publicly identified. The department declined to release additional details about the violation, citing personnel policies.
Smith said the findings of the investigation have been turned over to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, which will determine whether any criminal charges are warranted. At this time, there is no indication of criminal wrongdoing, he said.
“We take public trust seriously,” Smith said. “We are glad we had safeguards in place and took swift action to terminate the employee.”
Smith emphasized that license plate reader systems remain an important tool for law enforcement and said there is no indication of a data breach related to the incident.
