UPDATE APRIL 11, 2025 — Friday April 11, 2025, Judge Jessica Salvini denied bond for Victoria Tippett. Tippett remains held in the Anderson County Detention Center.

ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (BFMG) — A South Carolina judge is weighing bond for Victoria Tippett, a 21-year-old woman charged with obstruction of justice and misprision of a felony in the aftermath of the August 2024 murder of Jessica Barnes.

Tippett appeared in Anderson County court this week to request release on bond while awaiting trial. Prosecutors allege Tippett helped conceal Barnes’ body following her murder, which investigators believe was committed by the victim’s husband, Brandon Barnes.

Evidence of a Conspiracy and Flight Risk

During the hearing, the state laid out an extensive timeline, citing GPS records, surveillance footage, and Tippett’s own changing statements to law enforcement. Authorities allege that between August 2 and 4, 2024, Tippett and Brandon Barnes purchased cleaning supplies, a shovel, and a storage tote used to dispose of Barnes’ body. Surveillance video corroborates these purchases, and Tippett admitted the supplies were used to clean bodily fluids and transport the body from a pool house where the murder allegedly occurred.

SLED investigators later discovered a burn site along Twin Lakes Road in Pickens County, where canine units and forensic anthropologists confirmed the presence of human remains tied to Jessica Barnes.

According to law enforcement testimony, Tippett initially told police that Jessica had left the home and wasn’t seen again. In a second statement, she claimed Barnes died by suicide. Finally, Tippett admitted that Jessica was strangled during an argument with her husband. She also confessed to being present during the killing and helping with the disposal of the body.

Prosecutors highlighted a cross-country road trip taken by Tippett, Barnes, and another co-defendant, Kendall Mims, shortly after Jessica’s disappearance. GPS data shows the trio traveled through more than a dozen states in just a few days in mid-September before returning to South Carolina—an act the state described as an attempted flight and potential evasion of law enforcement.

Defense Argues for Reasonable Bond

Tippett’s attorney emphasized her lack of criminal history, youth, and unstable housing situation at the time of the crime. The defense said Tippett moved in with Brandon Barnes and others after becoming estranged from her family and having “nowhere to go.” She had only lived in the home for one to two weeks before Jessica’s murder occurred.

The defense asked the court to consider Tippett’s clean record, CNA certification, and ties to South Carolina, including her parents and potential placement in Aiken County if released. Counsel stated that Tippett is not charged with the murder itself and would comply with all court-ordered bond conditions.

A prosecutor acknowledged that Tippett was not accused of committing the murder but argued that her actions in helping to cover it up—and her willingness to flee the state—indicate she poses a significant flight risk.

Judge to Rule Later This Week

The judge deferred a decision on Tippett’s bond request, indicating she would hear additional motions before issuing a ruling by the end of the week.

Tippett remains in custody in Anderson County and authorities have noted that she also faces related charges in Pickens County.
