WASHINGTON (BFMG) — Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, convicted of killing 13 people in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, is scheduled to be executed by firing squad Dec. 3, acting Army Secretary Adam Telle said Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.
Telle said in a social media post that the execution would take place at Fort Hood, Texas.
The announcement came a day after Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said President Donald Trump had approved Hasan’s execution. The U.S. military has not carried out an execution since 1961.
Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, opened fire inside a medical building where soldiers were undergoing checkups. Thirteen people were killed and more than 30 were injured.
During his trial, Hasan acknowledged being the shooter and described himself as having switched sides. He said the attack was intended to prevent soldiers from deploying to Afghanistan and killing fellow Muslims.
Trump’s approval began a series of procedural steps toward carrying out the death sentence, but the announced date could face legal challenges.
An article published in Army Lawyer outlined how Hasan could seek review through a habeas corpus petition in civilian federal court, potentially delaying the execution for years.
The announced execution date does not resolve those potential court proceedings
