PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. (BFMG) — Authorities in southern Arizona are searching for the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie after the Pima County sheriff said investigators have identified a crime scene at her home north of Tucson.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen Saturday night at her residence and was reported missing around noon Sunday, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office. The circumstances discovered at her home quickly raised alarms for detectives.
Sheriff Chris Nanos told reporters that what deputies found at the residence gave them “grave concern.”
“This one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we found and located just in looking at the scene,” Nanos said.
At a Monday news conference, Nanos confirmed that investigators are treating the home as a crime scene.
“We do in fact have a crime scene,” he said, adding that there were indications inside the residence that Nancy Guthrie did not leave voluntarily.
“There are signs at the home that she did not leave on her own,” Nanos said. “I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls.”
Officials said Nancy Guthrie is not in good physical health and requires daily medication, but she does not have any known cognitive issues.
Search efforts around the property and surrounding area include the use of drones, search dogs, and teams equipped with infrared and heat-sensing technology as authorities look for any trace of the missing woman.
In a statement to NBC, the Guthrie family said, “We can confirm this is a missing persons case, and the family is working closely with local law enforcement.”
NBC’s “Today” opened Monday’s broadcast with coverage of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. Savannah Guthrie was not at the anchor desk.
Anyone with information about Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts or activities over the weekend is urged to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Office.
