WAYCROSS, Ga. (BFMG) — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has arrested a Ware County man in connection with the 1984 rape and murder of 22-year-old Sandra Kaye Davis.
Freddie Lee Granger Jr., 68, of Ware County, is charged with one count of rape, one count of aggravated assault, one count of malice murder, and two counts of felony murder, according to the GBI.
On Sept. 1, 1984, officers with the Waycross Police Department discovered Davis’s body beside a home on Kollock Street in Waycross. Investigators determined she had been strangled. The Waycross Police requested GBI’s assistance in the case, which remained unsolved for more than four decades.
Recent DNA testing linked Granger to the crime, officials said. He was taken into custody Tuesday and booked into the Ware County Jail.
The GBI’s Regional Investigative Office in Douglas led the investigation with assistance from the Waycross Police Department, the Ware County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Department of Community Supervision, and the GBI Cold Case Unit.
Authorities said the investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Douglas at 912-389-4103. Anonymous tips can be made by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), submitting information online at gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online, or through the See Something, Send Something mobile app.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
