RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (BFMG) — Sheriff Leon Lott and the family of Zelig Williams, a missing South Carolina native, held a press conference Wednesday at 11 a.m. EST to discuss the ongoing search efforts and to appeal to the public for help. Sheriff Lott expressed gratitude to the media for raising awareness of Williams’ case and noted that the purpose of the conference was to allow family members to share their perspectives.
Lott began the conference by explaining that he would not rehash the specifics of the case, stating, “I think there’ve been plenty of facts already given out — when he disappeared, where we found his car. I’m not going to go through all of that.” Instead, he highlighted the continuing efforts in manpower of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, which he said is utilizing every available resource and technology in the search for Williams and will continue to do so until he is found.
The first to speak on behalf of the family was Williams’ cousin, who expressed appreciation for the community’s support and shared insight into Williams’ life and character. She said,
Most people know Zelig for being a dancer, but he was more than that. He was a light to our family"
She also revealed that Zelig is his mother’s only surviving child, having lost two siblings in a past automobile accident. She noted that he may have stopped taking medication just before his disappearance, which could cause him to seem scared, disoriented, or in a trance-like state.
Caroline Jones, one of Williams’ many “dance moms,” spoke next, describing his talent and success in the dance community. Before breaking down in tears, she sent a message directly to Williams: “We love you, Z. We see you, and we want you home.”
Finally, Williams’ mother addressed the gathered media, her voice shaking as she pleaded for her son’s safe return. “I just want Zelig to come home,” she said. “He’s all I got. He’s all I got. He’s all I got.”
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department encourages anyone with information to come forward as the search for Williams continues. Family and friends hope that by sharing more about Zelig, they will inspire the community to help bring him home.
